Encourages kids to explore texture through painting

35 minutes
18 - 60 months
Group size
0 - 8 tots

  • 1 Fish Template
  • 1 piece Cardstock (Any color)
  • 2 Tempera paint (Different colors)
  • 1 tbsp Salt
  • 1 Pencil

  1. Prior to beginning activity, trace fish template onto cardstock.
  2. Prior to beginning activity, mix salt with one paint color.
  3. Guide the child to paint half the fish with the unsalted paint using his or her fingers.
  4. Now, guide the child to pain the remaining half with the salted paint using his or her fingers.
  5. Ask the child to describe how each of the paints felt (i.e. smooth vs. rough, bumpy vs. flat).
  6. Set painting aside to dry at least 15 minutes.
Use only the salted paint to teach the concept of rough.
Use four different colors and mix a different texture ingredient (i.e. coffee grounds, cornmeal, glitter, salt) in to each color. After allowing for drying time, ask the child to point out the smoothest and the roughest texture.

Consider brainstorming a list of good things to mix in paint versus bad things to mix in paint. Discuss why an item is good or bad.
