Demonstrates the unique characteristics of each person's fingerprints.

Group size
1 - 8 tots


  • Magnifying glass (One per child)
  • Paper (One piece per child)
  • Washable ink pad


  1. Provide each child with a piece of paper labeled "One of a Kind" across the top.
  2. Place child's finger on ink pad and roll to cover fingertip with ink.
  3. Press finger onto paper to create fingerprints. Repeat as many times as desired.
  4. Once dry, encourage kids to examine each other's fingerprints with a magnifying glass. Point out that everyone has fingerprints different than every other person in the world.
Associated Activity
For a class, create a class "One of a Kind" book to display in the classroom. Make a simply cover and attach each child's fingerprint page behind the cover. Add a magnifying glass to the book for a great addition to a science center
