Supplies

  • 2 Large boxes baking soda
  • 1 Large bottle of conditioner (or hand lotion)
  • Glitter (Blue, white, or clear)

Steps

  1. Pour baking soda into a large mixing bowl.
  2. Add up to a half bottle of conditioner (or hand lotion). Add small amounts at a time as you want to mix as you go. You want the mixture to be wet enough to mix but dry enough to hold together to form a ball.
  3. If desired, add glitter to create extra color and texture.
  4. Use mixture like play dough.
Associated Activity
This would be a great follow-up activity to reading a book about snow (i.e. The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats or Snow by Cynthia Rylant).
Associated Activity
Turn regular homemade snow into magic snow by spraying mixture with a small bottle of vinegar. The baking soda and vinegar create a fizzing reaction. Discuss this chemical reaction between baking soda and vinegar.
Tips & Tricks
Store homemade snow in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for several days for later use.
