Jealous of Jenny
Submitted by: AugustW
Aria's new baby sister takes all of Mommy's time. Can Aria learn to love little Jenny?
Aria was an only child, but she wasn’t lonely. She spent every day together with her Mommy, playing dolls, taking trips to the park and reading books. When Daddy would come home each afternoon from work, he would spend time with them both. Aria also played with her cat Turtle and her best friend Ryan, who lived two doors down.
When she was four and a half, Aria noticed that Mommy's belly was getting bigger. Mommy and Daddy told her she would soon be a big sister!
When the baby girl was born, they named her Jenny. Grandma brought Aria to the hospital so she could hold her little sister for the first time. Aria thought Jenny was small and smelled very nice, but she was heavy!
Aria was very glad when Mommy got to come home from the hospital. Mommy went to her rocking chair and fell asleep. When she woke up, she sat and gently rocked Jenny for a long time.
“Mommy, can you look at my pictures?” Aria asked.
“Shhh, Aria, sweetheart, the baby’s sleeping,” Mommy said. Aria was disappointed, but went to her room and colored some more pages in her coloring book.
A little while later, Aria came back to find Mommy changing Jenny’s diaper. “Mommy, can I have a sandwich?” Aria asked.
“Aria, dear, I’m changing the baby. Go ask Daddy,” Mommy said. Aria went into the kitchen with a big frown on her face. Mommy wasn’t paying any attention to her!
“What’s wrong?” asked Daddy.
“Mommy hates me,” Aria said.
“No, honey, no, she doesn’t!” Daddy said. “Mommy has a new job to do, so sometimes I’ll be here to play with you while Mommy takes care of Jenny.”
“I don’t like Jenny!” Aria said, and she started to cry.
“Aria, do you know what you’re feeling right now?” Daddy sat her down on the couch and hugged her. “You’re feeling jealous of Jenny. It’s normal to feel jealous when you have a new person in your life who Mommy and Daddy love too. But you know what? Mommy and Daddy love you just as much as we ever did. And now, there is someone else who will love you just as much as we do, and that’s Jenny.”
“Jenny will love me?” Aria said hopefully, wiping her tears on her yellow shirt.
Daddy used a tissue to help Aria blow her nose. “She will love you bigger than the whole world, and she will be so glad to have a brave big sister like you.”
Daddy hugged Aria tight again. Aria was feeling much better now.
“I think I want to hug Jenny!” she smiled, and ran to see if her baby sister was still awake.
