Kate’s parents were gone on a business trip. She was staying with her aunt and uncle. She really missed her parents and couldn’t wait for them to get back.

Kate decided to make a “Welcome Home” card for her parents. She grabbed a piece of paper and a box of markers. Kate drew a picture of her family on the front of the card. On the inside, she wrote “Welcome home Mom and Dad.”

Her parents were coming home tomorrow. She and her aunt and uncle were going to pick them up from the airport. Her aunt told her they would stop on the way to get flowers to go with her card.

The next morning, Kate jumped out of bed. She got dressed as quickly as possible. Her parents’ flight arrived at 9:30 AM. It was nearly time to go to the airport. The drive there felt like it took forever. When they finally got to the airport, it was almost time for her parents’ flight to land.

“Mommy! Daddy!” squealed Kate as soon as she saw her parents.

Kate’s parents hugged her. First she hugged her mom, then her dad, then all together. Her dad picked her up and carried her with them to pick-up their luggage.

“It's good to see you, sweetie. We missed you! Did you miss us?” asked Kate’s mom.

“Of course I missed you,” answered Kate. "I even made you a card!"

Kate gave the card and flowers to her parents.

"Thank you Kate," said her dad. "We love it! Especially your drawing of our family."

Kate sat between her parents on the ride back to her aunt and uncle’s house. When they got back to their house, her dad opened his suitcase, pulled out a small brown box, and handed it to Kate. She opened the box and inside was a smooth, blue piece of sea glass.

“It’s beautiful,” marveled Kate.

“We thought it would be a great piece for your collection. It made us think of you because it matches your pretty blue eyes,” explained her mom.

“Sweetheart, we just want you to know that we love you. We think about you no matter where we are or what we are doing. You are so special to us,” said her dad.

Hearing that made Kate’s heart warm and happy.
