Create a memory piece from time at a tide pool or on the beach.

135 minutes
18 - 60 months
Group size
1 - 4 tots

  • Seashells and other beach treasures.
  • Small pieces of drift wood
  • Glue

  1. Walk your favorite beach, or visit a tide pool.
  2. Help child find interesting shells, small pieces of driftwood, feathers, beach glass or agates.
  3. Discuss all the forms of life you find on your walk.
  4. Discuss how far the driftwood or found objects may have traveled.
  5. Point out the birds who share the beach, and look for their feathers.
  6. Discuss how driftwood, beach glass and pebbles are affected by the tumbling action of waves and the abrasion of sand.
  7. Carry home the most precious finds. Rinse and allow to dry thoroughly.
  8. Lay out the prepared treasures onto driftwood, and secure with craft glue.
  9. Allow to dry.
Find a small, hand sized shell for little hands, and then help child look for similar pieces. Clam shells and Sand Dollars are great for beginning beach walkers.
Older children may use field guides to identify the shells they find, the currents bringing flotsam onto the beach and the birds whose feathers they find.
